 To my family:

One idle day in late 2000, when I didn’t have a big house, gardening or craft project to occupy my time, the idea of putting together a book of favorite recipes started to gel for me. Then with the New Year, a long winter ahead and still no alternative projects to tackle, I set about scribbling some ideas on a notepad. Here’s a short excerpt:

Theme:    School Days

Recipes:  Mom’s Famous Chocolate Chip Cookies

               Mom’s Peanut Butter Cookies

Theme:    Main Dishes

Recipes:  Sandy’s Beef Stroganoff

               Jeaneane’s Meatloaf

Theme:    Summer

Recipes:  Turkey Burgers

               Mom’s Potato Salad

Theme:    Parties

Recipes:  Cavatini

               La’s Vegetarian Lasagna

I also have miscellaneous recipes scribbled everywhere on the pages, like Nathan’s Appetizer, Debbie’s Famous Fudge, Mom’s Coffee Cake and Linda’s Microwave Peanut Brittle. I guess I was just brainstorming about recipes that I thought would need to be in the book.

In addition, I scribbled little snippets: many of those that I first wrote were about Christmas and childhood stuff—just one-liners. I’m not quite sure what my intention was at the time, but these snippets evolved into the snapshot memories that are now throughout the book. Yes, there are some short stories that are just long-winded snippets, but the snapshots are definitely my personal favorite because I think they trigger different recollections in each of us when we read them.

Nearly two years later, the book is finally ready to be printed. (I had no idea it would take so long to complete such a project.) As I was typing up the Index, I was amazed to find that the book had grown to more than 300 recipes and 200 pages! That’s a lot of stuff! I certainly hope your favorite recipes and stories have been incorporated—and not just mine. Since obtaining these recipes and recollections from you was, at times, somewhat complicated—mostly due to the distance between us and busy family schedules—some recipes or favorite snippets may be missing. That’s the reason for the Other Recipes section to be used in the future.

I do wish to thank all of you for humoring me and providing the material for this book. I hope I didn’t hound you too much. Remember: I still have more family sections to complete next year! I also hope that you use the book and re-discover some old family favorites that perhaps you’d all but forgotten about. I also hope the next generation will enjoy the book equally as well.

This was truly a labor of love on my part, but could not have been completed without your full support. I can check this off my to-do list. But, what will I do now? Guess I’ll have to twiddle my thumbs and see what I can come up with next…

With Love,

Karin
